What Should I Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

For gorilla trekking in Uganda, wear waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, a breathable long-sleeved shirt, thick socks and a lightweight rain jacket. Gardening or trekking gloves, a hat and neutral-coloured clothing are also recommended. These items protect you from rain, mud, insects, stinging plants and rough vegetation while helping you move comfortably through the forest.

Choosing what to wear for gorilla trekking is an important part of preparing for one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife experiences. Uganda’s gorilla treks take place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where trails can be steep, muddy and covered by thick vegetation.

The weather can change quickly in both parks. A morning may begin cool and misty, become warm during the hike and turn rainy without much warning. Dressing in light, removable layers will help you remain comfortable as the conditions change.

This practical guide from Ngeye Tours & Travel explains what to wear, what to carry and which items are best left at your lodge.

Quick Gorilla Trekking Packing Checklist

What Shoes Should I Wear for Gorilla Trekking?

Waterproof hiking boots with a deep tread and reliable ankle support are the best footwear for gorilla trekking. Forest trails can include mud, loose stones, exposed roots and steep slopes. Proper boots provide better stability than ordinary trainers or running shoes.

Choose boots that have already been broken in. Wearing a new pair for the first time on trekking day can cause painful blisters and make a long forest walk uncomfortable. Test your boots on several walks before traveling and wear them with the same socks you plan to use during the trek.

Mid-height or high-cut boots are particularly useful because they support your ankles and make it harder for mud, small stones and insects to enter. If your boots are not fully waterproof, consider applying an appropriate waterproofing treatment before your safari.

Avoid open shoes, sandals, fashion boots and shoes with smooth soles. You may carry lightweight sandals for relaxing at the lodge, but they are not suitable for entering the gorilla habitat.

Should I Wear Long Trousers and Long Sleeves?

Yes. Long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt are essential even when the weather feels warm. They protect your skin from scratches, insects, thorny branches and stinging vegetation.

Choose lightweight, breathable and quick-drying fabrics. Technical hiking clothing is useful, but you do not need expensive specialist equipment. Durable travel trousers and a comfortable long-sleeved shirt can work well if they allow easy movement and dry reasonably quickly.

Your trousers should not be so tight that they restrict climbing or stepping over forest obstacles. They should also be strong enough to withstand contact with branches and vegetation. Convertible trousers can be used elsewhere on your safari, but keep the lower sections attached throughout the gorilla trek.

Avoid heavy denim jeans. Once wet, denim becomes heavy, takes a long time to dry and can restrict movement. Cotton garments may also remain damp, so quick-drying materials are preferable.

Do I Need a Rain Jacket for Gorilla Trekking?

A lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho should always be packed, including during Uganda’s traditionally drier months. Bwindi and Mgahinga are rainforest environments, so showers can develop unexpectedly.

Select a jacket that is waterproof but breathable. Heavy jackets can become uncomfortable during uphill walking, while a thin windbreaker that is not waterproof may offer insufficient protection during sustained rain.

Dress in removable layers

Layering is especially helpful during early morning briefings and at higher elevations. Begin with a breathable base layer, add a light fleece when necessary and keep your waterproof outer layer accessible. As you warm up during the hike, you can remove the fleece and store it in your daypack.

Avoid dressing in one very heavy layer. Several lighter pieces are easier to adjust as the temperature and your activity level change.

Why Are Gloves, Thick Socks and Gaiters Recommended?

Protective gloves

Gardening or lightweight trekking gloves protect your hands when you need to steady yourself on branches or vegetation. Gloves are particularly useful on steep or slippery sections where you may instinctively reach for support.

They do not need to be expensive, but they should fit securely and provide reasonable grip. Avoid bulky winter gloves because they may become hot and make it difficult to operate a camera.

Hiking socks

Wear breathable, moisture-managing hiking socks that rise above the top of your boots. Carrying a spare pair in a waterproof bag can be helpful if the first pair becomes soaked.

Some trekkers tuck their trousers into their socks to reduce the chance of insects entering. Gaiters provide a neater and more protective alternative by covering the gap between the bottom of your trousers and the top of your boots.

What Colours Should I Wear for Gorilla Trekking?

Neutral and earthy colours such as olive green, brown, grey and khaki are practical choices. They blend into the forest environment and can conceal mud and dust better than very light clothing.

Avoid camouflage-patterned clothing because military-style dress may be restricted or culturally inappropriate in some African countries. Plain neutral colours provide the same practical benefit without causing confusion.

Very bright or fluorescent colours are unnecessary, while black and dark blue clothing may attract more heat in exposed areas. White garments quickly show mud and can be difficult to clean during a multi-day safari.

What Should I Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park contains dense vegetation, mountainous terrain and trails that can become muddy after rainfall. Waterproof boots, long trousers, gloves and reliable rain protection are especially important here.

Bwindi has several trekking sectors, including Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Conditions and hiking difficulty vary between gorilla families and from one day to another. Because the gorillas move freely, nobody can guarantee the distance or duration of a particular trek.

Your day normally begins with an early briefing before rangers allocate visitors to gorilla families. Tell your safari guide or the rangers about relevant mobility concerns so they can consider them during group allocation, although an easy trek can never be guaranteed.

Hiring a local porter is highly recommended. A porter can carry your daypack and offer support on challenging sections, reducing fatigue while providing direct income to the surrounding community.

What Should I Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga?

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies within the Virunga Mountains and features bamboo forest, volcanic terrain and relatively high elevations. Mornings can feel noticeably cool, making a light fleece or warm mid-layer particularly valuable.

The volcanic slopes may be rocky, steep or slippery after rain. Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support remain essential, while a walking stick can improve balance. Walking sticks may be available locally, so ask your guide before bringing one from home.

As the day becomes warmer, breathable layers allow you to adjust without carrying unnecessary weight. Keep your rain jacket near the top of your bag because conditions in the mountains can change rapidly.

Mgahinga can also be combined with golden monkey tracking, birdwatching and cultural experiences, allowing travelers to use much of the same outdoor clothing on several activities.

What Should I Carry in My Gorilla Trekking Daypack?

Use a small, comfortable and preferably water-resistant backpack. Pack only what you need because unnecessary weight can make steep trails more tiring.

  • Lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho
  • Drinking water in a reusable bottle
  • Packed lunch or energy snacks arranged by your lodge
  • Personal medication
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Camera with spare batteries
  • Waterproof bag or cover for electronics
  • Small pack of tissues
  • Copy of your passport or required identification

Binoculars are also useful because both parks support remarkable forest birdlife. Travelers can combine gorilla trekking with our Uganda birding safari experiences.

Camera preparation

Carry a camera you already know how to operate. Flash photography is not permitted around the gorillas, so disable the flash before the encounter begins. Protect your camera from moisture and avoid carrying excessive equipment that will slow you down.

What Should I Avoid Wearing for Gorilla Trekking?

Leave unsuitable or unnecessary items at your lodge. Avoid wearing:

  • Sandals, flip-flops or open shoes
  • Shorts or short skirts
  • Sleeveless tops
  • Heavy denim jeans
  • Brand-new, untested hiking boots
  • Camouflage or military-style clothing
  • Strong perfume or heavily scented products
  • Expensive jewellery
  • Clothes that restrict movement

You do not need to look fashionable in the forest. Comfort, protection and mobility should guide every clothing decision.

How Should I Prepare for the Weather?

Uganda’s drier periods generally occur from June to September and December to February. These months are popular for Uganda safaris because forest trails may be easier to navigate.

However, rain is possible at any time in Bwindi and Mgahinga. Travelers visiting during the wetter periods should expect muddier trails and place extra emphasis on waterproof footwear, gaiters, rain protection and quick-drying clothing.

Do not rely entirely on seasonal averages. Check the forecast shortly before departure and follow the local advice provided by your guide.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gorilla Trekking Clothing

Can I wear trainers for gorilla trekking?

Trainers are not recommended because they may provide insufficient grip and ankle support on steep, wet or muddy forest trails. Waterproof hiking boots are a safer and more comfortable choice.

Should I wear jeans for gorilla trekking?

Jeans are not ideal. Denim becomes heavy when wet and dries slowly. Lightweight, durable and quick-drying hiking trousers are more practical.

Do I need gloves for gorilla trekking?

Gloves are strongly recommended. Lightweight trekking or gardening gloves protect your hands when holding vegetation for balance.

Should I tuck my trousers into my socks?

You may tuck your trousers into long socks to reduce exposure to insects and vegetation. Wearing gaiters provides better protection and helps keep mud out of your boots.

Do I need a rain jacket during the dry season?

Yes. Bwindi and Mgahinga have rainforest and mountain climates, so rainfall can occur even during traditionally drier months.

Can I wear camouflage clothing in Uganda?

It is better to avoid military-style camouflage. Plain khaki, green, brown or grey clothing is appropriate for the forest.

What should women wear for gorilla trekking?

Women should wear the same practical trekking clothing recommended for all visitors: long hiking trousers, a breathable long-sleeved shirt, waterproof boots, thick socks and a rain jacket. A supportive sports bra can improve comfort on uneven terrain.

What should I wear after the gorilla trek?

Keep clean, lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes at your lodge. A warm layer can be helpful during cool evenings in southwestern Uganda.
