Everything you need to know before embarking on an East Africa safari — gorilla permits, packing lists, health precautions, and what makes travelling with Ngeye different.
The logistics of adventure, simplified for your peace of mind.
Uganda is a year-round destination. The dry seasons (June–August and December–February) are ideal for gorilla trekking and game drives — trails are more accessible and wildlife gathers near water. The wet season (March–May and September–November) brings lush green landscapes and exceptional birdwatching, with fewer crowds and more competitive rates.
Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking permits are strictly limited and in extremely high demand. We strongly recommend booking 6–12 months ahead, particularly for peak season (July–September and December–January). Other safari components can often be arranged with 2–3 months' notice — but securing the permits first is critical, as everything else is planned around them.
Most nationalities require a visa. Uganda offers a straightforward e-Visa — apply online before travel at visas.immigration.go.ug. We recommend applying at least 3 weeks before departure. Our team provides personalised visa guidance and a pre-travel documentation checklist to all confirmed guests.
Our packages typically include accommodation (as specified in your itinerary), all meals, national park entry fees, activity permits (gorilla tracking, chimpanzee habituation, game drives), an experienced English-speaking local guide, and ground transportation in a custom safari vehicle. International flights and travel insurance are not included — we clearly itemise every inclusion and exclusion in your personalised quote with no hidden costs.
Days begin before sunrise. After a warm briefing with your guide over coffee and rusks, you set out for morning activities — trekking through Bwindi's mist-covered forest to find a gorilla family, a game drive across the savanna of Queen Elizabeth National Park, or a chimpanzee track through Kibale Forest. Afternoons offer rest, birding, or cultural visits. Evenings are for sundowners and dinner under Africa's skies, trading stories from the day with fellow travellers.
We partner with handpicked eco-lodges and forest camps that reflect the character of each destination — intimate tented camps on the Nile's edge, stone lodges overlooking crater lakes, and chalets bordering Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Every property is personally vetted for comfort, food quality, and environmental stewardship. Your itinerary quote clearly specifies the accommodation category and property for every night.
Most partner lodges offer Wi-Fi in common areas, though connectivity in remote national parks may be limited — we consider this part of the experience. Charging facilities for cameras, phones, and laptops are provided at all properties. Many lodges run on solar energy with generator backup. We encourage guests to embrace the digital detox that the African wilderness naturally provides.
Pack light, neutral-coloured clothing (greens, browns, khaki) — essential for gorilla trekking. You'll need sturdy waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket, a wide-brimmed hat, a quality insect repellent, and a camera with extra batteries. Avoid dark blue or black (tsetse flies are attracted to dark colours). Every confirmed guest receives a comprehensive packing checklist tailored to their specific itinerary and destinations.

Health & Safety
Prioritising your wellbeing so you can focus entirely on the adventure.
Absolutely. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers accompany every group and are trained to ensure the safety of both guests and gorilla families. Groups are strictly capped at 8 people per gorilla family per day, and rigorous health and behaviour protocols are enforced. The main consideration is the physical demand of the trek — ranging from 30 minutes to 6+ hours depending on gorilla movement. Our guides pace every group carefully and no one is left behind.
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is a legal entry requirement for Uganda. Anti-malarial medication is strongly recommended for all regions. We advise visiting a travel health clinic 6–8 weeks before departure to receive current, itinerary-specific advice. All confirmed guests receive a detailed health and safety advisory as part of our pre-travel documentation package.
Basic clinics are located near major park entrances and gateway towns. Kampala has well-equipped private hospitals for more serious medical needs. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation. All our guides carry professional first-aid kits and our vehicles are equipped with basic medical supplies at all times.
Conservation & Impact
Your journey supports the preservation of Uganda's extraordinary wildlife and the communities who live alongside it.
A significant portion of every gorilla permit fee is channelled directly to Uganda Wildlife Authority's conservation and anti-poaching operations. Beyond permits, Ngeye Tours donates a portion of each booking to community development projects in Bwindi and Mgahinga — funding school infrastructure, women's cooperative enterprises, and sustainable alternative livelihoods that reduce human pressure on the forest.
We are committed to low-impact travel in every dimension: small group sizes (maximum 8 per gorilla family), eco-certified lodge partners, elimination of single-use plastics on all safaris, and hiring exclusively from local communities — over 90% of our guides and lodge staff are Ugandan. We adhere strictly to Uganda Wildlife Authority's environmental codes and the principles of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Yes — and we actively encourage it. Many of our itineraries include optional community walks through Bwindi villages, visits to Batwa cultural sites, women's craft cooperatives, and schools supported through the permit revenue fund. These encounters are always guided, respectful, and arranged with full community consent. They tend to be among the most memorable moments of any safari.
